RBS Group inaugurates new IP SMPTE 2110 plant, in partnership with AD Digital and Imagine Communications
Composed of 12 broadcasters in Rio Grande do Sul, RBS TV is one of the first Globo affiliates to enter the IP 2110 world through the inauguration of its newest exhibition park. The project, located at the group's headquarters in Porto Alegre, was headed and implemented by AD Digital in partnership with Imagine Communications, with activities officially starting this Tuesday, September 26th.
In 1967, RBS TV marked the history of the Media and Entertainment industry by becoming the first affiliate of Rede Globo. In more than six decades of history, starting on radio and later expanding to TV, print and digital, always exploring new ways of connecting with the public in Rio Grande do Sul, Grupo RBS is known for its constant search for innovation.
IP has been a widely discussed topic for many years within the market, being a representative of this rapprochement between IT processes and broadcasting. The native flexibility of this type of infrastructure, which allows greater scalability and durability in relation to SDI projects, offers a new range of possibilities for different areas within a broadcaster's ecosystem. From this point on, the option to set up an IP plant made a lot of sense for RBS TV.
“Revolutionizing with a fully IP 2110 Display Center is a source of pride and reinforces the RBS Group’s leadership vision. It was a project lasting more than two years that prepared RBS TV for the constant changes in the media industry. We chose the Imagine solution, implemented by AD Digital, through a rigorous selection process that evaluated everything from the technical qualities of the equipment to the professionalism of AD Digital. This allowed us to start at the appropriate size and ensure that the plant will grow according to our needs. We are very confident in this partnership”, says Roberto Hoffmann, Technology Project Manager at RBS TV.
“When we talk about IP, the great benefit is the ease of growth in quantity as well as quality; which will allow scalability regardless of the format defined for video resolutions, with smarter and more efficient workflows. It is a resilient and future-proof infrastructure, that is, capable of adapting to all of the RBS Group's needs in the medium and long term, and will certainly have a much longer useful life than the traditional Broadcast standard.”, comments Leonardo Teixeira, Head of Business at AD Digital.
The implementation of this project was a co-created project between the AD Digital and RBS teams involving the areas of display, automation and measurement of IP signals. Communication between different technologies was done through the open NMOS standard, which allows for more cohesive functionality between this large multitechnology project.
“During all stages, RBS made the requirements and objectives of the IP infrastructure project very clear. Our team worked very hard alongside their team to make this entire new ecosystem work in the best way possible” says Hugo Nascimento, CTO at AD Digital. “The support of both our technological partners, the RBS team and our own team were fundamental for us to be able to make this delivery.”
In IP infrastructure projects, Imagine Communications is one of AD Digital's main technology partners, delivering solutions that suit a wide variety of architectures. In the RBS installation, the matrix is based on Imagine technologies, such as the Magellan™ Control System, the Selenio™ Network Processor (SNP) and the EPIC MV in the role of IP multiviewer.
The SNP has achieved a hugely important role in this infrastructure. The solution is known as one of the Swiss army knives for TV system infrastructure, delivering a complete SDI/IP Gateway in full compliance with ST 2110, ST 2022 and NMOS standards, which is a very important factor for the gradual transition of an SDI infrastructure to a new IP-based one. Furthermore, the SNP can assume different profiles to meet different needs, such as SDI/IP multiviewer, master control, HD/3G/UHD audio and video processing, SDR/HDR conversion or JPEG XS compression.
Sergio Yanez, Vice President of Sales LATAM at Imagine Communications, complements this vision: “This project represents a significant step for the Brazilian market, proving that our easy-to-implement technology for IP is one of the best on the market. Our SNP and Magellan™ Control System are capable of delivering operational efficiencies, allowing the RBS architecture to easily scale as business requirements evolve in the near future. This implemented IP environment will allow RBS to manage multiple multi-vendor IP media workflows. We thank RBS for the opportunity to work with our partner, AD Digital, on this important implementation.”
This migration from SDI to RBS Group IP is representative of the market movements that we should observe in the coming years. As an IP SMPTE 2110 implementation can be carried out in a simplified and gradual way, adapting to the needs of each business, it is very likely that we will see more and more successful cases of migrations to a hybrid or completely IP system.
“The market has been going through a series of transformations in recent years. It is clear that RBS has a great vision of innovation and this IP 2110 project is yet another illustration of the path they have been following so far”, concludes Daniela Souza, SVP at AD Digital. “I speak on behalf of the entire AD Digital team when I say that it is very gratifying to be part of another chapter in the history of this communications group.”
